A disconnected WhatsApp device means missed messages, delayed responses, and frustrated customers. The monitoring tools in Chatmo help you catch connection problems early β ideally before your customers even notice.
Real-Time Device Monitoring
The WA Devices page provides a live view of every connected device's status. Each device card updates in real time, so you can see at a glance whether your devices are online, offline, or somewhere in between.
To open the monitoring page for a specific device, click Monitor from the device's actions menu on the WA Devices page.
Overview Tab
The Overview tab displays comprehensive information about the device being monitored.

Information available on the Overview tab includes:
Device Profile:
- WhatsApp profile photo
- Device name
- Phone number
- WhatsApp status
Connection Status:
- A connection status card showing the current state of the device
Device Info:
- Device name
- Phone number
- Device type (Android, iPhone, Web, Desktop)
- WhatsApp version
- Battery level
- Session start time
Statistics:
- Messages Today β Number of messages processed today
- Last Activity β Timestamp of the most recently processed message
- Uptime β Duration the device has stayed connected without interruption
Message Statistics Tab
The second tab displays Message Statistics in the form of a 7-day line chart visualizing sent versus received messages. The chart uses Highcharts with an areaspline type for an easy-to-read display.

This chart helps you understand message volume trends over the past week, allowing you to identify usage patterns and detect anomalies early.
Status Indicators Explained
Your devices will display one of four statuses during operation. Understanding what each one means helps you decide when to act and when to wait.
| Status | Color | Icon | What It Means | Action Required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Connected | Green | Wifi | Device is online and processing messages normally. | No β everything is fine. |
| Disconnected | Gray | WifiOff | The connection has been lost or the device is logged out. | Yes β reconnect as soon as possible. |
| Connecting | Amber | RefreshCw (spinning) | Device is attempting to establish or re-establish a connection. | Wait β give it a moment before intervening. |
| Error | Red | XCircle | Something went wrong with the device. | Yes β investigate and reconnect manually. |
A device that flickers between "Connected" and "Connecting" several times an hour usually points to a network issue on the phone side β not a Chatmo problem. Check the phone's Wi-Fi or mobile data stability first.
Common Causes of Disconnection
Knowing why devices drop offline helps you prevent it from happening again. These are the scenarios that come up most often:
Phone-related issues:
- The phone ran out of battery or was turned off.
- WhatsApp was force-closed or crashed on the phone.
- The phone lost its internet connection (Wi-Fi dropped, mobile data cap reached).
- Battery optimization or power-saving features killed WhatsApp's background process.
WhatsApp-related issues:
- WhatsApp pushed an update that requires the app to be opened manually.
- The WhatsApp account was logged out from all linked devices (this happens occasionally during security checks).
- Too many linked devices on the same WhatsApp account caused a session conflict.
Network-related issues:
- Your server or Chatmo's infrastructure experienced a temporary connectivity hiccup.
- A firewall or proxy rule changed and is now blocking the WebSocket connection.
How to Reconnect a Device
When a device shows as Disconnected or Error, Chatmo provides a QR code-based reconnect process. The reconnect page uses a two-panel layout: device information on the left and the QR code on the right.

Reconnect Steps
- Go to WA Devices in the sidebar.
- Find the device showing Disconnected or Error status.
- Click the Reconnect button in the device's actions menu.
- Chatmo will display the reconnect page with a new QR code.

- Open WhatsApp on the phone associated with this device.
- Go to Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device.
- Scan the QR code displayed on screen.
- Wait for the status to change to Connected.
WebSocket States During Reconnect
During the reconnect process, you will see the status change progressively:
- INITIALIZING β The system is preparing the connection
- GENERATING_QR β The QR code is being generated
- QR_READY β The QR code is ready to be scanned
- CONNECTED β Connection was successfully established (or ERROR if it failed)
QR Code Expiration
If the QR code expires before you scan it, click the Refresh QR button to generate a new one. There is no penalty for refreshing.
Automatic Redirect After Success
Once the connection is successfully established, Chatmo will automatically redirect you back to the device page within 10 seconds.

Canceling a Reconnect
If you want to cancel the reconnect process, Chatmo will display a confirmation modal to make sure you don't cancel accidentally.

Automatic Reconnection
Chatmo doesn't just wait for you to notice a problem. When a device drops offline, the platform automatically attempts to reconnect it. Here's how the automatic process works:
- Immediate retry β As soon as a disconnection is detected, Chatmo makes an immediate reconnection attempt.
- Exponential backoff β If the first attempt fails, subsequent retries happen at increasing intervals (a few seconds, then 30 seconds, then a minute, and so on).
- Session validation β Each retry checks whether the WhatsApp session token is still valid. If it is, the connection restores silently.
- Notification trigger β If automatic reconnection fails after several attempts, Chatmo flags the device and notifies you that manual intervention is needed.
In practice, most short disconnections resolve themselves within a minute or two without you lifting a finger. It's only persistent outages β usually caused by phone-side issues β that require manual reconnection via QR code.
Automatic reconnection can only succeed if the WhatsApp session is still valid and the phone is online. If the phone is completely off or the session has expired, manual reconnection through QR code scanning is required.
Monitoring Device Health Over Time
Short-term status is useful, but patterns over time tell you more about a device's reliability. Pay attention to these trends:
- Disconnection frequency β A device that drops once a month is fine. A device that disconnects daily has an underlying problem that needs attention.
- Reconnection time β How long does it take for a device to come back online? Consistent delays may indicate network issues at the phone's location.
- Message throughput β A sudden drop in message volume on a device that's technically connected could signal a partial failure or message routing issue.
If you notice a device consistently struggling with connectivity, consider replacing the phone or SIM card, moving the phone to a more reliable network, or switching to a dedicated device that isn't used for other tasks.
Alerts and Notifications
Staying glued to the device management page isn't realistic. Chatmo can notify you when something needs attention:
- Dashboard alerts β A notification badge appears on the WA Devices section in the sidebar when any device is disconnected.
- In-app notifications β Pop-up alerts within Chatmo notify relevant team members about device status changes.
- Email notifications β Configure email alerts in your notification settings so you're informed even when you're not actively using the dashboard.
To configure which notifications you receive, go to Settings > Notifications and adjust your preferences for device-related events.
Best Practices for Device Reliability
These tips come from teams that manage dozens of WhatsApp devices through Chatmo without frequent disruptions:
- Use dedicated phones β Don't use a personal phone for your Chatmo WhatsApp device. A dedicated, always-plugged-in phone is far more reliable.
- Keep phones charged and connected to Wi-Fi β Battery deaths and mobile data dropouts are the top two causes of disconnection.
- Disable battery optimization for WhatsApp β On Android, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Optimization and exclude WhatsApp. On iPhone, ensure Background App Refresh is enabled.
- Update WhatsApp regularly β Outdated versions can cause compatibility issues with linked device sessions.
- Assign a team member to monitor devices β Especially during business hours, someone should be responsible for checking device status and handling reconnections promptly.
- Document your devices β Maintain a simple log of which phone number is on which physical phone, where that phone is located, and who is responsible for it.
